Gloria Uduku will purchase the food and beverages with an eye towards keeping things returnable. She is an event planner and is able to estimate how much is needed.
Sandy will talk with Sandy Cederbaum about serving and cooking supplies available at The Other Barn
Marcia will check with Gloria about amounts that she suggests we purchase.
We'll bring enough coolers for different drinks and serve our non alcoholic drinks from coolers.
Do we want to do a 70's food display calling attention to our retro food? Sandy is going to give this some thought and share with Marcia and then the group.
Sandy and Marcia will coordinate with one another and tell us when the next conference call will be held.
Need to decide on cost of beer and wine – should also make a sign showing cost

What new slang was introduced during the 70s that you can think of? This is a list of all the words that were in popular usage during the 70s.

real deal or truth ex "let me give you the slinney on the deal"
' Can You Dig It'
Do you understand? " Can you dig it man?"
' Psyche'!!!
To trick someone. To b.s. someone. As if to psyche them out.
'Bogue'
Used to describe something offensive or an unrealistic idea. "That's so Bogue" or "That's Bogue" or "Bogue, man..."
'Bootin'
as in; Are you going Bootin? "I'm going Roller Bootin" or rollerskating
The 'Crib' and going to the 'Gig'
The "crib" was going home or to someone else's house, and "gig" was work or job.
'Don't Be Such A 'spaz'
A 'spaz' was someone that was accident prone,clutsy, or just acting stupid.
'Dream On'
a term used to get someone down to earth, or tell them they are being unrealistic about something, e.g. when someone would say, "I'm getting a brand new car!" you'd respond, "Yeah, right; dream on man!"

A Midwestern phrase in the late 70's. To describe something odd or unusual. Not necessarily an person or object of distaste, but something suspect but also intriguing. "Sick!"
'The Man'
the man to me means any authority, corporations, police, government, they're all the man tho first used in the 60's by the hippies it live through the 70's,80's,90's and still to this day
'To The Max'!
Take it to the maximum. The best it can be.
'You Know'
This was said at the end of nearly every sentence :)
'You're So Stunned'
Meaning the person acted or said something stupid, dumb.
'Your Mama'
"Your Mama" was said a lot of my school, with also "Joe Mama." With "Happy Days" that brought us the word "Nerd" which was VERY popular.

to run quickly, usually away from something. (ie The cops were after hi so he was booking down the street.)

I'm pretty sure the definition you list for a brown-noser - "cheesier" - is in fact supposed to be "cheese-eater." I've heard cheese-eater used numerous times as a synonym for a suck-up, but never cheesier. Is it possible that someone mis-heard "cheese-eater" and just always heard it as "cheesier"?

The phrase is used in various ways usually by teeneagers and 20 somethings who automatically, subcociuously add a toutch of 'trendiness' to thier sentances. For instance: "Like, let's get outa here!" "Like, no way!" "This is like way cool guys"

Thought you might be interested to know that my dad, Al Corban, who is 87 years old and was a long-time trucker and driver says he originated the term "smokey" and by the same action originated the term "bear". In Montana, where he was operating for most of his life, there was a hauling job in which timber was being taken out of a National Forest area. Because of that the Forest Service had people checking the trucks to see that they were meeting all the standards. In fact, they could issue tickets and fines. The truckers would call each other when one was spotted somewhere and warn others about their presence. Since they wore the standard uniform with the "Smokey the Bear" hats, Dad started talking about them on his radio as "Smokey Bears" or, as it was quickly shortened to, "Smokies",a "smokey" or "Bear(s)". As time went on the term naturally got picked up and applied to any mobile law officer or any officer in general.

She was tearing up the dance floor, spinning while the flashing green and hot-pink lights bounced off a disco ball and "You Should Be Dancing" boomed over the sound system. Then, curly haired dance diva Peyton Campbell broke it down, old-school, to "Brick House."

Then she took a nap.

That was the scene yesterday as 2-year-old Peyton and other tiny dancers burned off energy at one of the hottest shows touring the party circuit, Baby Loves Disco. Sold out weeks ago, it was a 300-person play date that mixed Bud Light and ba-bas, sequined halter tops and Huggies.
Once a month, the latest in I-don't-wanna-grow-up parenting hits the District at the edgy nightclub of the moment, the Rock and Roll Hotel. The H Street Northeast club, which had been booze-soaked and packed with 20-somethings just hours earlier, was triple-scrubbed, festooned with balloons and padded with colorful foam floor tiles yesterday afternoon to host clubbers who are twentysomething inches.

"No more Barney!" Ivie Higgins roared as he hoisted a glass and twisted to "Superfreak" with his 20-month-old daughter, Isabella.

"I know, I know. It's more for the parents," said Higgins, who came to H Street from Silver Spring and described himself as "coming on 40" years old. "But it's so nice to be here and do something different with my daughter for a change," he said.

Parents who are tired of the birthday party-park-pizza place-Gymboree circuit and determined not to give their lives entirely over to their pint-size dictators are flocking to the Baby Loves Disco tour. Tickets are $12 for all walking humans. They often sell out minutes after going online.

"It's one of those things that works for everybody. And especially, we see lots of dads. It's an interesting thing, the dads coming," said Susannah Monteith, sister-in-law of the co-founder of Baby Loves Disco and the local mommy host.

It began in Philadelphia in 2004, when Heather Murphy Monteith, a mom, rented a club one weekend and realized her vision of a cool place for kids and parents to have fun. Andy Hurwitz went to one of the parties, thought it was fantastic and partnered with Monteith to spread the idea to New York.
The circuit now covers nearly 30 U.S. cities, from Honolulu to Boston, and eight foreign countries. The founders search for nightclubs that are open to being associated with children (not all clubs want to taint their hip factor), have a good venue with play space and "chill-out" rooms, and will strive for parent-approved cleanliness, Susannah Monteith said.

"The clubs are triple-cleaned," she said. "Then I come, like, two hours before the event and clean some more. And we put plugs on all the outlets, that kind of stuff."

For kids, there are unlimited, free boxes of organic juice, crackers, pretzels and other finger snacks offered at a knee-level buffet table.

The dance floor has hula hoops, scarves, maracas and streams of bubbles. There are face painters, balloon animals, glittery nail polish stations and temporary-tattoo artists.

Yesterday, in an upstairs room decorated to look like blood was dripping from the walls (Rock and Roll Hotel decor, not Baby Loves Disco), there was a diaper-changing station near the photo of infamous Sex Pistols couple Sid and Nancy. Another chill-out room had colorful carpets, books, wooden toys and comfortable couches that have certainly seen plenty of action but were home to rows of breast-feeding moms yesterday afternoon.

The hallway had fliers from old concerts, most featuring '80s punk bands -- Sonic Youth, Black Flag, Black Market Baby, G.B.H. (remember their "City Baby's Revenge" album?).

"Well, I can say it looks a lot different in the daylight," said Yvonne Neal, 34, who surveyed the well-lit club and cringed at her hazy memories of other nightclub encounters. She was hanging with her 5-year-old, Kara. "It's really fun now to watch her dance with other kids."

Yes, of course. Dancing and socializing and fun.

But for many parents, the beauty of Baby Loves Disco is summed up in one phrase: Bar's open.
Tim Wynne took a long pull on his rum and Coke. He was glad that he could buy a drink. He was, after all, huffing on the dance floor, his 11-day-old son, Henry, strapped to his chest in a Baby Bjorn and his wild 2-year-old, A.J., wiggling across the room.

His wife, Becky, was delighted to get back into a nightclub so soon after childbirth.
"When you become a parent, you suddenly stop being this person you've been all these years, and that part is hard," she said.

The magic of the place was also clear for Dan and Barb Scheeler, who were both drinking pints of Guinness while their boys, 3 and 5, waited for balloon animals.

"That balance of something for kids and something for grown-ups is so important and hard to find," said Dan Scheeler, who has taken the family from Alexandria to H Street twice this year for Baby Loves Disco.

On the dance floor, DJ Adolph Brown took the crowd through the '80s. The dads lifted Coronas in the air. Some hollered when the Pet Shop Boys began singing. They spun their little dates around, singing to their West End Girls.

For some of the younger set, this was a chance to practice their moves with the ladies. David, 18 months, eyed an older woman: Lilah, 2. She was the quirky type, one leg warmer, a pink tutu, blond ringlets and a killer smile. He took a big pull off his juice box and wobbled up to her, a typical nightclub move. He attacked with fervor, giving her a giant, sloppy hug.

His mom, Sharon Boesen, dived in and pried him off her. "A little more gentle next time, David," she said.
Baby Loves Disco welcomes kids up to 7 years old. David will have plenty of time to hone his pickup line.

1. Planning and doing areas to discuss:

a. Decorations - MK, Ben, and Meg
b. Food and Drinks - Marcia going to ask Gloria if she can buy. Retro candy can be bought online.Food ideas - Tang, Tab, Jello mold with fruit, hamburger helper, lighting gel that is green and yellow, spam, swedish meatballs
c. Advertising - Instructables are good if someone wants to do them. Fliers, all the standard ways, Socializr without showing email addresses.
d. Video - Someone needs to build and then set up the slide show. James Ferry is going to digitize all the pics.
e. DJ/music - Travis Hamilton, willing to give us whatever music we want, karyoke, $225 7 - 11
f. Emcee Palmer - provide agenda for the evening to both Scott and Travis.
g. Kid stuff - bubble machine (This area needs more parent thinking folks to idea about.)
h. Tickets - Want to make adult tickets no more than $8 at the door -$5 in advance
i. Games/contests/connection activities/prizes - Dance contest oughta be done in the Soul Train Line

2. MK will work with Ben to create a budget for the event.

3. Jessie's idea re: acknowledging connections/tagging - totally optional, favorite 70's band - Everyone liked this idea. Need a sign that explains what to do.

4. Updates from last meeting

a. Mirror ball - Take old CDs and make a million squares, styrofoam ball, thing to turn it.
b. DJ - Ben will work with him
c. Principals being the judges for contests - MK - ask at the Principals meeting if they will do and if know where to rent.
d. Maggie Brown judge for contest - Sandy
e. Disco Alias finder - Do a low tech version and pull slips of paper to find your disco name. Pick two or three different names. add page to wiki. add page for tags too.
f. Old pictures digitized by James Ferry - Sandy spoke with them and they are good to go with scanning
g. Local Girl Scouts for kiddo watching/activities - Sandy
h. Other advertising sources/vehicles

The food was great, the wine deelish, the ladies fabulous, and cool ideas aplenty!

Budget:

Let's figure out what we want/need to purchase to scope costs.
Let's estimate how many folks will attend and forecast revenue - Sandy, how many folks can the room hold with tables set up?

Entertainment/Music:

Sandy is going to ask about the mirror ball at Curves to see if we can borrow it in return for a shout out. She's also going to ask the CA guys if they have any ideas about hanging it.
Ben has found a good DJ who will cost us about $225
MK is going to ask OM dance teacher Barbara Chaney if she would lead/teach folks to do the Hustle, Bus Stop, etc. Patricia is going to ask her brothers Mark & Todd too.
MK has a friend, (also a member of this here wiki), who is quite the entertainer and has agreed to be our MC for the evening. His name is Scott Palmer, and he makes me laugh. He has agreed to don his disco finest for the event.
The DJ will provide Karaoke - woo hoo! Lavenia Nesmith, OM Jazz queen, said tonight that she'll be doing some Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor. Marcia is going to ask Jim Alvey to do a few too.
Patricia suggested the Soul Train dance line, and all agreed it was a brilliant idea.
A 70's Fashion Contest with prizes - for adults and kids - See if the OM Principals will be the Judges. Maybe Maggie Brown.
Perhaps some OM trivia with prizes
Perhaps a dance off between neighborhoods, or if you went to SFES, TSES, THES, etc. or if you've lived here for XX years, or if you were on the swim team, etc.
We could set up a computer/database where folks can get their "Disco Name" just like Bad Girl Names - www.badgirlswirl.com, click Alias Finder. (I'm Funk Delilah BTW)
MC could do some of the "wedding" raise your hands if you've lived here X years, etc.
A group of original residents want to have a reunion. We'll reserve a table for them and consider some other special stuff for them.

Decorations/Goodies/Food:

Sandy is going to see if James Ferry can get all the old OM pictures digital. We will do a PPT show with old pics, perhaps some 70s video, disco pics, etc. We should also send out an email to everyone asking them to ideally email pics in. We'll display up on the brand new fabulous movie screen!
We'll need to do a bit of shopping for decos. One good place to look is www.orientaltrader.com if anyone gets a hankering to do a little reconnaissance.
Sandy had a marvelous idea - for goodies we can have big glass jars of bulk candy with cool bags to fill up with candy. Perhaps we could get some packaged in 70's packaging, hmmm - Retro Candy & 70s Candy
We'll look into buying a keg to see if it's a better cost. Could just be cool! We'll sell by the cup.
We'll get some wine that we'll sell by the glass
We'll give away soda and bottled water.
Snacks will be provided in cost of entrance.

Highlighting/Acknowledging/Encouraging Connections:

Jessie shared a great idea with me today about folks "tagging" themselves. Jessie, it's late and I am tired, so would you be willing to add it?? It was quite cool, and my vote is to do it.

Kiddos:

Sandy is going to talk with the local Girl Scout toupe leader to see if there are some girls who can come and baby sit with an adult. We can set up games, video, etc in the Tack room for the kiddos to avail themselves of when they are done with dancing. We can suggest that familes bring pillows and sleeping bags for kiddos who want to snooze. More planning needed in this area.

Folks who are putting their energy, effort, and good vibes into the event (AKA volunteers) get in free (and get a lot of fun out of their involvement!
